The most popular reason people come to a personal trainer or start a new fitness routine - FAT LOSS!
Why do we focus so much on a number on a scale or a number on our trousers as to a indicator of health?

People spend hundreds, thousands of pounds sometimes and find that they either dont make the fat loss progress they want or that when they do while the fat is gone they still struggle to play with the children, run for the bus etc!

We have obviously had health focussed in the media rather alot in the last year! A little virus has caused devistation everywhere!
Now we do know that obesity is a big influence in mortatlity rates with covid but what about other illnesses, diabetes, lung issues etc.

Now this isnt a post about covid but, what if we focus more of our efforts on health, the whole area, Heart, Lungs, Muscles, Mind rather than just purely body compositon?

Do you know you can be lean and still get diabetes, heart disease, lung problems etc? Mental health too, fat loss isnt going to necessarily have a positive impact on your mind!
If the way you look is what is causing your mental health issues i.e self confidence then of course, however if you dont need to lose bodyfat exercise for health is found to improve mood and help recovery!

So for 2021 lets focus a little less on just losing fat and set ourselves goals for health, let your goal be distance ran, time taken to complete, weight lifted, played with the kids for x time, managed monkey bars, blood pressure dropped, heart rate improved, not out of breath climbing the stairs etc!!

All of those are examples but they all give a quality of life improvement. Being focussed purely on dropping a inch round the waist is all well and good but will it have such a huge impact on the rest of your life and how you live it?

This is the most important thing to take away when your looking to make ay changes, be they bodyfat, performance, strenghth, muscle, endurance.
Just doing the work and letting the changes happen over time is better rather than trying to accelerate the process, cause stress to the body, cause stress to the mind and make you hate what you are doing.

Says everything really.
We look to try and make everything simpler so we have shakes, ab machines, pills etc!
These are all aimed to make life simpler but you know the best way to make progreess is to just make things simple!

Making progress is simple. Its track and plan. Have a idea of what your calories are, look to choose nutrient desne foods if possible, have a consistant progressive program. Put all three together and you can see massive results!
Much better than the quick results from the simpler soloution that dont last or make you hate life!!

Everyone wants things to work quickly. The problem with quick is that they may not be long lasting.
Your body is a complex machine and while making changes to it are actually simnple they are not "quick".
To make consistant, effective changes you need a plan and you need to be consistant. As long as you are consitant and tracking you will make progress. If you dont then you will find yourself running up a very steep slope and constantly sliding back to the start.

☠️ Warning - this is not a happy go lightly post. It is to help realise that it is ok to not be ok with everything going on but to also help to give you tools to help you.

Im not the most photogenic at the best of times! The photo is of me!

Last Wednesday🤦‍♂️

Yes I had a complete emotional breakdown! Totally lost it emotionally! Things had just gotten on top of me from the last year, and you know what I am not ashamed to admit it! I am not ashamed to show this photo!

I know that lots of you have and are struggling. We all try to keep it together but sometimes we just cant and after the way things have been you know what? ITS OK!!

So why post this?

It isn't for drama, it isn't for pity, it isn't for likes, it's to help others that may be feeling this way and thinking they shouldn't. The second photo is from yesterday with Noah.

The first photo shows:

⚫Someone that just reached their breaking point after a YEAR of ups and downs.
⚫Someone that is the same as everyone out there currently.
⚫ Going through the same thing day in day out, not knowing what's happening.
⚫Trying to put things in place, get things that work for the 'rules', change them again!
⚫Deal with new rules for Christmas, then deal with changes to Christmas again!
⚫Think certain things will happen then they don't.
⚫Have things go on in their personal life get through them, have other things crop up.
⚫Try to be a dad as best they can be, in person and remotely.
⚫To be strong for those around them, to help others!
⚫Have people come into their life and leave their life over the last year.

This year has been the hardest year some of us will have endured.

lease give yourself a break before you end up breaking!

Realise
⚫ It is ok to not be perfect
⚫ To not get everything done,
⚫ To sometimes have to step back from things,
⚫ To admit to how your feeling,
⚫ To tell others and let them help,
⚫ To actually give youself some time to feel awful!
⚫ To realise what is good for you and what isnt and change it.

So go easy on yourself, your trying to be parents, teachers, bosses, owners, workers, friends, partners, lovers, trainers and therapists!
Thats 10 roles potentially and you are just 1 person!

🚨 What can you do though when it gets tough?

🔹There is plenty, believe me. First thing is talk, admit to someone you're struggling. There is no harm or stigma behind it.
🔹Look to speak to someone professional if you need to, loads of places out there that can help and if you need it speak to your GP. They are still available.
🔹Apps such as Moodfit, Headspace, Calm can help you to lower your anxiety, control your thoughts and help you focus on the positive aspects.
🔹Get outdoors, especially currently. Being outdoors boosts your mood. The sun, the air just getting outside and walking for 20 minutes is enough.
🔹Exercise, as well as getting outdoors find some form of exercise you enjoy, cycling, swimming, running, hill walking, weights, HIIT, Dance whatever. Something you can do to elevate your heart and get yourself moving in various ways.
🔹Mindfullness, something I am a huge believer in. Before l4 months ago I did this all the time. For some reason when I needed it the most I stopped. Just practicing it and only living in this moment makes a huge difference in how we view things.
🔹Best thing though is to admit your struggling, don't hide it. There is no stigma with any of this, life is not all happy and shiny, it isn't all the way people depict it on Facebook and Instagram (I know I am posting it on those platforms!)

Give yourself the permission to be kind to yourself.
I hope you all are doing ok with this new lockdown, if however you're not then talk or find help. I know it was the best thing I did last week and you can see the person in the second photo isn't a red blotchy mess!! 😂🤣

Maybe the first step is just putting a comment below this, knowing that I have struggled I hope that this just helps others to know they can get through things too.

Been there myself a lot in the last year! I think the longer it goes on the harder it is to pull yourself out of it. I wrote a list of things I would like to achieve by the end of the year. Also keeping a diary and trying to keep up with exercise. Get out and walk at least every day. It will get better 🤞🏼

There’s always something better waiting just around the corner. That’s what I always say to myself. I hit a massive low in 2010 when I nearly lost everything. Your photo of your boy reminded me what brought me back, a day out with my boys when I realised what’s important and that it’s not me that’s failed, it’s the situation I’m in and I can get out of it. Things can and will get better. Either we beat the virus or we have to just move on with our lives and accept the risk. I can’t see another option. Keep well. I’m looking forward to getting back in the Gym and if you need anything you know where I am.

It’s tough for most people at the moment, thank you for sharing your experience and also for highlighting ways to help us all cope. Looking forward to catching up soon.

You are doing an amazing job despite all the ever changing rules. We all have moments like this, some of us are not as brave to admit. You are doing great. Keep going !the sun will shine again for us all soon x

Always at the end of the phone if you need a chat rich x

Take it easy brother Rich and if you need to talk at anytime about anything. Don’t ring David L Hellings 😘
